For four years, the City of Portland sponsored six Bureau of Maintenance employees per year to participate in the Ignition Series. That represents approximately 6 percent of their workforce. Even with only 24 participants, they reported increased creativity and confidence, improved attitudes and new collaborative working relationships throughout the organization, where all levels of employees are focusing on the "bigger picture" as if they were senior managers. There's a new level of influence and ownership of the corporate culture. Even though 15% of participants initially expressed the intention to leave the organization, all are now committed to contributing in a meaningful way. In addition, 50% of the participants have been promoted (even when it appeared to some that no opportunity existed) or have chosen to work on special projects in order to contribute even more. During the series, participants 1) identified their individual patterns of success, 2) clarified what they needed to feel a sense of purpose in their work and 3) took individual accountability to continuously and creatively accomplish that goal. Since then, half of the employees who completed the series have come together and created a heartspark Alumni Connection that meets on a monthly basis. Their goal is this: "...influencing management, peers, crews and ourselves through our attitudes and behavior to create unity — a collective passion for the work we do." |
